The Ayee Dance Team had one sacred rule: never exercise where it was convenient.
Every dawn, six silver-haired women in neon leggings claimed the busiest intersection in town. Boombox cranked to nuclear. Squats in the crosswalk. Lunges between taxis. Horns blared. Drivers screamed. The team only turned the volume higher and shouted, “Ayee!” like they were summoning rain.
In the park they occupied the only shaded bench path, doing jumping jacks while toddlers tripped over resistance bands. In the farmer’s market they dropped for push-ups between the tomato stalls, music so loud the avocados vibrated.
When a young runner once asked why they couldn’t just use a gym, the eldest wiped her brow, smiled sweetly, and replied, “Because the world already belongs to the young and quiet. We’re simply reminding it that we can still make noise.”
