He simply sat, bowl already full, tentacles rising from the broth like eager waiters. Around him, the other children ate in perfect silence, their own eyes flickering the same unnatural crimson. The sign above the door read RAMEN SHILL BROTH, but no one ever asked what a shill broth was. They only knew that once you tasted it, the noodles whispered, the steam carried secrets, and the hunger never quite left.
Tonight a new customer wandered in, drawn by the smell of something richer than pork or miso. The boy looked up, smiled a mouthful of too many teeth, and slid an empty bowl across the table.
“First one’s free,” he said, voice soft as broth. “After that, you work for it. Outside, the lanterns swayed. Inside, another pair of eyes began to glow.
“These noodles don’t stick to your ribs—they stick to your soul.”
“Hungry? Good. The broth prefers its customers already half-empty.”
“Blink twice if you’re still human. Blink once if you’ve joined the special.”
“Extra chili? Sure. It only burns on the way in."
