Lying Flat Not Defeat

Just the decision to stop standing up for a race that never ends.
In the city of Endless Climb, where the elevators never stopped and the staircases multiplied overnight, lived a man named Wei. Every morning the loudspeakers barked the same slogan: “Stand taller! Run faster! The top is just one more floor away!”
Wei had stood. He had run. He had climbed until his knees sang the national anthem of exhaustion. Then one ordinary Tuesday he simply… lay down in the middle of the lobby.
The crowd gasped. A manager in a suit three sizes too ambitious pointed and shouted, “Defeatist! Quitter! Look at him—flat as a discarded spreadsheet!”
Wei smiled at the ceiling tiles, which were the only things in the building that never pretended to be going somewhere. “Not defeat,” he said calmly. “Just the decision to stop standing up for a race that never ends.”
Word spread faster than the company’s quarterly targets. Soon others began to join him—secretaries, engineers, even a vice-president who arrived in his socks and stretched out beside Wei like a man finally clocking out of a job he never applied for. They called it 躺平. Lying flat. The posture of people who had measured the height of the ladder and found it infinite.
The loudspeakers tried new slogans. “Get up or get left behind!” “The race rewards the upright!” But the floor had already become a quiet republic of horizontal citizens. They shared snacks, told stories of the years they had wasted standing, and watched the ambitious ones keep climbing past them, faces redder, shoes thinner, eyes emptier.
Years later, tourists still visit the lobby. They find the same circle of people lying there, perfectly still, perfectly content. A plaque on the wall reads:
*Here the race ended for those who refused to run it.*
*They did not lose.*
*They simply stopped playing.*
And if you listen carefully, you can still hear Wei’s soft chuckle whenever someone new arrives, kicks off their shoes, and chooses the floor over the stairs.
