The regulars treated it like a map. Every newcomer would stand beneath the words, point to one side or the other, and argue about which arrow pointed true. One night a quiet stranger walked in, studied the sign for a long minute, then sat down in the exact middle of the room.
“Wrong,” he said softly. “You’re both looking at the wall. I’m looking at the table.”
He ordered coffee, stirred it once, and never raised his voice. By closing time the arguments had quieted. People still glanced at the sign, but most of them now glanced at the empty chair in the center first. The paint never changed. The conversation did.
