Great Bear Independence: Alberta Doesn't Negotiate

Alberta doesn’t ask permission. It drills, it harvests wheat, and it wears a bear that looks ready to secede on its own. Ottawa’s the high-maintenance date who spends the paycheck, lectures you on carbon, and still wonders why you’re not more grateful.

That’s the sitcom beat. Confederation as a roommate agreement where one guy brings the oil and the other brings the sermon.

Who Pays, Who Preaches

Albertans have sent more than $244 billion into federal coffers from 2007 to 2022 while collecting almost none of the equalization pie since the program started. A 2021 provincial referendum to change that formula passed 62 percent and was treated like a suggestion Ottawa never opened. Support for independence hovers around 30 percent—not a majority, but enough to make the rest of the country pretend it’s just “western alienation” instead of arithmetic.[1]

Premier Danielle Smith, who is not running on a breakup, still said the quiet part in the legislature:

“It’s not like Ottawa is a national government. The way our country works is that we are a federation of sovereign, independent jurisdictions.”

The left hears that and clutches the maple leaf like it’s a safe word. The right sometimes gets stiff and writes another stern letter. The Great Bear just keeps looking at the pipeline that never quite gets built.

Why the Claws Are Out

Energy policy, emissions caps, and the long memory of the National Energy Program turned a resource province into a punching bag that still writes the checks. Subtlety never built a pipeline. The piety from the centre is that Alberta should subsidize everyone else’s feelings and then apologize for existing. The stiffness on the other side is waiting for Ottawa to suddenly discover manners.

The adult in the room is the province that actually produces something the world wants. Wear the attitude if you think Ottawa’s a suggestion, not a rule. Independence looks good on a bear that already paid for dinner. That’s the show.
